And so the Sister’s arc is finally over. Accelerator is beaten, Touma is victorious, and Misaka now has her heart set. It’s sad that the most climactic part of this series is supposedly over, but it was a fun ride regardless.
So the build-up is finished and we know who wins, but there’s still one final touch of background info that worked well by the end: accelerator’s reasoning for joining this experiment. Yes we know that his reasoning for joining was to obtain ultimate power so that no one would bother him. But the few flashbacks we get in this ep paint a more…sympathetic picture. While in previous series he’s shown as a power hungry maniac, here it displays just how isolated his powers have made him.
The military keeps a close eye, anyone he comes across wants to challenge him, and most people who get near him end up dead. In fact the one time kids accepted him as a child, his powers went out of control and murdered everyone. His initial goal for achieving Level 6 was to avoid more casualties, but he slowly descended into madness after killing thousands of the MISAKAs. By the time he’s defeated, even he doesn’t know what he’s doing anymore.
Other than that, we do get some refreshing scenes between Misaka and MISAKA 10032. They’ve cut out the scene involving Touma’s bond with MISAKA, but we do get more confirmation that the MISAKA’s do have feelings now. And even if MISAKA tends to mock her sister’s flaws, she’s proud to say Misaka is a sister that would give her life for them. And as for Misaka? Well let’s just say she may not be ready to hand out home-made cookies for Touma, but she’s at least ready to bake them.
So overall, the Sister’s arc ends on a surprisingly gentle note. The brutality ends fairly quickly, and much of it was spent on how Misaka feels about both the Sisters and Touma. And despite this clearly segueing back into slice-of-life territory, I’m happy with what we’ve got. You’ve done good, JC Staff. So please make these fillers worth watching!
