Monogatari Series 2nd Season ep 4 impressions

At this point, things have gotten really confusing. Not only do we start during the morning after the fire last ep, but we suddenly get introduced to new characters that we are supposed to be familiar with. That and most of this ep has nothing to do with the plot.

To sum things up, we get introduced to two new characters: a vampire hunter named Mr. Episode, and his client Gaen. They supposedly fought with Black Hanekawa before the events of Bakemonogatari, and comment on how she’s nowhere near as threatening as she was before. Other than that though, they do identify the tiger apparition as “Kako”. So the rest of the episode is focused on Hanekawa finding out what Kako means.

We do get the answer to that question(jealousy), and it links back to Hanekawa through a string of clever puns. We also find out that every place that burned down so far was a place that Hanekawa had rested in, leaving Hitagi and Koyomi’s place at risk.

However, the way we get to it is more focused on Hanekawa’s reaction to things rather than through exposition. To put it bluntly, it feels really slow trying to get to the answer, but overly complex when it comes to the clues we have. And while this does help in keeping us in the dark when it comes to the final reveal, it’s nevertheless frustrating to figure out.

Does that make this ep bad? Heck no! There’s alot of fun to have other than figuring out what’s going on. Araragi’s mother shows up and turns out to be nothing like their children. She’s harsh and introspective, but genuinely caring about Hanekawa’s parental issues. Hitagi also shows up with her usual sharp remarks and useful hints for the meaning of Kako.

The Fire sisters mention about their boyfriends being like Araragi, which is unsettling for Hanekawa(incest is a no no), and Hanekawa even leaves indirect messages for Black Hanekawa when she awakens. Simple put, the main story is a bit of a drag, but what’s happening around is anything but boring. Having said that though, I hope this arc ends soon, since it’s sheltered to only a few characters right now.
