So after ranting on how much of a cash grab this show was since it aired, and the announcement of a 2nd season being greenlit, does Fate Kaleid get any better at this point?…Yes it does, but not enough to make it anything special.
One thing that made it somewhat better is how they layoff the references and actually focus more on the relationship between Illya and Miyu. There’s a convincing friendship between the two that has both ups and downs, and seeing how it goes throughout the dangers they go through definitely felt like its own thing. This was the one aspect that didn’t feel like a cash-grab to fans, but an effort to actually build-up some character development.
It’s this aspect that also made the final battle seem somewhat tense. Illya starts questioning the possibility of death after a nearly lethal accident, and Miyu reacts coldly to this by telling Illya to never fight with her again. Miyu is of course protecting Illya from fighting anymore considering she’s her only friend, but it hurts Illya just as much. Saving Berserker for last was a good choice because of how overpowered it was. It forced Miyu to rethink her loner/martyr ideals and convinced Illya to keep her trust in Miyu rather than run away in fear.
But none of that actually makes this show great. All of the developments are predictable right off the bat, and the comedy is just as repetitive. As great as the fight scenes are, the actual parody is more focused on referencing the Fate franchise rather than actually making fun of it. Not to mention that the yuri undertones between Illya and Miyu are somewhat out of place considering how they mention it as just a close friendship(seriously, when did Illya suddenly become a rapist?).
Overall, Fate Kaleid liner Prisma Illya isn’t the worst show out there, but it’s not one that I particularly enjoyed. As a parody/spin-off, it’s clear from the get go that this was a cheap cash-grab aimed at Type Moon fans that wanted to see Illya in a short skirt. But as a stand-alone, it’s simply a very cliched mahou shoujo series with some impressive fight scenes. It’s watchable at best, but I don’t plan to blog the sequel when it airs.
