What did we learn today in the latest episode of Highschool DxD NEW? Issei can still use Dress Break, the 3 factions always have a pouty minion, and Azazel is really good at persuading Issei despite the constant outbursts of hatred he gets from him.
Simply put, the 3 factions all come together in order to face a bigger threat, this time in the form of a battle-obsessed relative of Leviathen Serafall. Commanding what appears to be an army of female illuminati, they seem to appear in endless amounts and have control over Gasper’s time control, meaning all but the most powerful beings(demon, angel, fallen angel, etc) can attack.
Almost everything that happened in this episode was based around cooperation and acceptance. Azazel and Vali keep the enemy busy while the demons and angels find a solution for the teleporting witches. Rias and Issei go out alone to search for Gasper, and then snap him out of his self-damnation by having Rias assure that he has great worth as a friend/servant, and Issei cuts himself with Ascalon in order to power up Gasper’s time stopping ability and attack his captors.
Having said that, it doesn’t go anywhere deep with these values. Because let’s be honest, depth isn’t what Highschool DxD specializes in unless you count boob radius. Kind of dissapointed that all the magicians use are beam spam, considering Azazel and Serafall’s fight is colorful and fast-paced. But I say it’s worth it considering we see Gasper power up with Issei’s blood, leading to the triumphant return of Dress Break.
This was a pretty predictable episode when it came down to it. There’s battles, boobies, running gags and cheesy mythology being discussed. But that’s really the main reason I want to go back to this show every week. It’s got a story and it’s got some action, but it’s really meant for boobs and over-the-top melodrama. And unlike other harems that try to pretend that they’re better, this wears those two aspects with shameless pride, and I can’t wait for the final ep.
