If you’re wondering why I took so long to get back to Coppelion, let me make it blunt. For the most part, IT STINKS! It gets slightly enjoyable near the later episodes, but this show has gone from captivating to downright cartoonish.
The foremost of concerns would go to the story. After dealing with the stealth plane and evacuating Professor Shiba, a stash of chemical waste being smuggled in the capital becomes the segue to a rogue militaristic group collecting waste from mercenaries while attacking a group of survivors. And while this was interesting at first, it became more and more nonsensical as further details were revealed.
Much of this can be attributed to the jarring shift in tone. It changes from sorrowful to silly at the drop of a hat, and this shift can happen to ANY scene regardless of its prior context. For example, the captain of the 1st division is initially portrayed as a lost military soul, willing to welcome his death. But then he acts like a 007 villain with his plans to destroy the world. Moments like this became more prevalent and ruined any chance for me to take it seriously, which is unfortunately the intent every time it gets preachy about the post-apocalypse or human experimentation.
Speaking of more, it seems that characters have increased in number, but not in quality. Most of the survivors feel more like tag-alongs than the Coppelion are to the story, and the prime minister is nothing but the shallow asshole we’re used to seeing as politicians. Haruto(the male coppelion) is the only addition that works. He’s skilled, efficient, and doesn’t hold back when it comes to getting the job done. Yet he also doesn’t come off as cold, often showing concern for the safety of both Coppelion and humans. Heck, he donates his blood to Ibara when she gets mortally wounded! He’s the only character other than Ibara that’s USEFUL!
On the other hand, Aoi is this show’s epitome of useless. She’s always getting in trouble, does nothing but run in times of need, and she’s ALWAYS WHINING ! They try to play her off as a clumsy gag character, but all it does is make her seem more annoying considering everyone else is bleeding for her incompetence. Need more proof of her uselessness? She needs to rely on a pep talk from a freaking robot. If that’s not pathetic, I don’t know what is.
The Ozu sisters are in a league of their own. Rather than useless, they come off as contradictory to what a Coppelion should be. We’re clearly told that the Coppelion are trained since birth to save humanity, and yet they let these two psychos roam free through ruined Tokyo and helping the extinction of the world. Not to mention that their powers go beyond believability and straight into superpower levels. This problem is minor compared to the rest, but I can never buy human experimentation in a realistic sense once you give them the ability to control Electricity. I’m not playing Infamous here.
So if it’s lost on both the story and characters, why am I still hanging onto this series and not dropping it? Well other than my no-drop policy, I have to admit that I still like this setting. I still like seeing all the barren ruins of Tokyo and the frontier settlements of remaining survivors. And if anything, the action scenes never fail to impress even when they get dumber as the show goes on.
Despite my harsh complaints, I don’t really hate this show. It’s got some neat action and the world is pretty to look at. However, it’s bogged down by obnoxious commentary, cliched subplots, shallow characters and a tone that’s stuck between reckless excitement and sorrowful regret. It’s become a completely different show from what it was before, and the result is downright stupid. Especially if your cliffhanger for your latest ep is that WIND IS BLOWING!
Edit: Expect a good action scene involving a giant spider, but everything else is BULLSHIT! FUCK THAT ENDING!
