Well we’ve finally got some new material! And boy do they drag it on like there’s nothing left.
Yeah, you’re probably noticing my lack of enthusiasm right from the start. So let me just start off by saying this; these past 3 episodes feel more like a dragged-intro than the set-up for a sequel. The moment something new is brought up, it’s either barely touched upon or stretched out. Instead, the majority of these episodes are uneventful filler with a handful of highlights in between.
That being said…the highlights are still thoroughly entertaining. The episode starts off with Yuuta dreaming a naked Rikka in his bed, only to wake up to Rikka giving her best Spider-man imitation. What could top that? How about Yuuta dressed as a mahou shoujo? Kyoani is no stranger to crossdressing gags, but boy is it glorious to see how unfitting it is with Yuuta.
Of course, Shichimiya was by far the star of this episode. We expected her to be the rival to Rikka, but what’s surprising is how much firepower she has from the start. Apart from living in Rikka’s old room, she’s the one that actually triggered Yuuta’s chuunibyou back in middle school.
She’s also much more open with Yuuta when it comes to affection, something that Rikka sees as an immediate threat. I can’t be certain that she’s a romantic rival, considering how happy she seems with Rikka and Yuuta’s relationship. But it’s clear that Yuuta’s sudden transfer before the start of season 1 left her with unrequited feelings. I’m still rooting for team Rikka, but in the words of Darth Vader,”the force is strong in this one.”
I’m going to make this clear; I’m still having fun with Chuunibyou Ren. There’s always a good moment per episode, and i’m definitely interested in what happens next. But i’m not sure if there’s enough here to write about weekly.
