After we get the sense of Soma’s personality, this is where it really comes in handy. This is the start of the Ikumi arc, well at least I like to call it that. A bunch of new characters are introduced in these past 4 episodes. The first ones I like to mention are from the dormitory that Soma is in named the Polar Star Dormitory. The first one is the Satoshi Isshiki. And I’m glad he introduces himself as the show got even wackier than I imagined. He looks like a friendly dormmate who is a senior when it comes to their years but there is a secret which is that he is the 7th seat in the Elite Ten Council, which pretty much is an all powerful student council, like in any other anime. This is where the best of the best cooks get placed in and they have authority right under the director. But anyways, he is shown to be handsome and yet he likes to farm outside with only an apron. Another one I like to mention is the dorm warden named Daimido Fumio. She has a high standard for any student that comes into the Polar Star dorm. She is a kind old woman and kind of bland but man what I like to point out is the foodgasm that she experiences. That was a metaphor that I could not have come up with. Though I do admit the voice is somewhat annoying. It has a certain clack to its voice just enough to be slightly irritating. Other members of the dorms just don’t hold up as well when it comes to being memorable as a character themselves(at least not yet for me) . They mostly do nothing other than to give react and explain the science behind the food’s delicious taste.
But to the meat of this arc, it introduces Ikumi Mito, a trusted ‘underling’ of Nakiri Erina. The arc begins with Soma trying to find a club he might join and comes across a club called the Don RS. Soma and Megumi goese to this club to find Kanichi Konishi being the only one there. After listening to him, he is about to be shut down by Ikumi who wants to use the room for her own personal use. Soma, seeing the imagination and creativity they put into their recipes, he decides to defend them by challenging Ikumi to a Shokugeki, which is a cookdown and the winner gets their demands fulfilled.
This is the first arc where I found very exciting after all the introductions and all the reactions. Something that felt like something was at stake, in-universe, I felt was necessary. But of course, I had no doubt about the results of this competition, (it’s shounen and its the first battle). So the exciting part was the the result but how our main character try to overcome this obstacle using his outgoing personality and his quick wit. Like seriously, some of these methods you really need a degree in chemistry to figure some of these out I think. I feel that the battle was given the right amount of suspense and beautiful images of food to keep the episodes interesting and helps to show the progress Soma is going through. The food really makes me hungry and I hate and love them for that. Of course, the reactions are priceless yet again and I do hope that we can learn more about Ikumi after showing us that flashback scene.
God Damn It. I want to go into the details on the food. The focus of this competition was meat and I am a meat-aholic and that is probably my downfall. The fine rich details on the meat where the oil oozes out and drips into the rice. The succulent meat and rice combo entering into the people’s mouths delighting them with the heavenly journey to the great meat beyonds.
I expect more from this anime and can’t wait to watch this when I am done eating dinner.
PS: After this arc, Soma will become the harem master of that school.
